Director ID - A New Identification Number For Company Directors

To stamp out the use of false and fraudulent director identities and illegal phoenix activity, company directors are now required to apply for their director ID with Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS). This is a 11-digit number belongs to the individual director like a tax file number and will be kept for life, regardless of whether a person changes directorships, stops being a director, changes their name, or relocates internationally.

When to apply

From 1 November 2021 to 4 April 2022, new directors have 28 days to apply for their director ID. After that, it is compulsory for new directors to have their ID before the appointment.

Those who were directors on or before 30 October 2021 have a-year time until 1 November 2022 to apply.

Current directors of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations need to apply by 30 November 2023.

How to apply

Applicants will need to apply via ABRS webpage using myGovID login. They will be required to conduct a "proof of ATO record ownership" (PORO) by supplying their tax file number, the address registered with the Australian Taxation Office and answering two questions that can be matched against the agency's information (bank account details or a reference number from an ATO notice of assessment, etc.)

When applying online, applicants will receive their director ID instantly.
